Wavy Trees single ‘Growing up’
The American band Wavy Trees was formed in 2019 and brings a unique rock sound to their music. Something about their music feels incredibly real and human, which is becoming increasingly rare these days. They are not scared to express their true feelings and make music that feels right. to them.
Their latest single ‘Growing Up’ provides an interesting take on growing up and coming to the realisation that everything around you is changing, while also keeping their nostalgic, fun sound which provides an incredible contrast to the general sadness of the lyrics. Zack, the lead singer of the band has stated that the song is about ‘the inevitable truth that finds us all'. I feel as though this is a feeling we all stumble upon at some point as we get older and find ourselves changing and having less time for a lot of the things we enjoy.
What’s so great about this song is that is it can be enjoyed and related to by such a diverse audience, weather you’re 20 just starting to figure your life out or you’re 40 reflecting on the past, this song could be interpreted in countless ways to fit into all listeners lives. That’s also one of the magical things about music, it doesn’t matter who you are if a song inspires or relates to you in some way, then it is for you.
‘Growing up’ feels like one of those timeless songs that you can always come back to, there’s a comforting feel to it, the lyrics combined with the bands unique sound really just pull you in and get you hooked!
This single is described as ‘surf rock and reggae’ which feels very fitting, the merging of genres brings a unique sound that I personally advent heard much of recently. You can clearly hear the reggae influence in the beat to the song which gives a slightly upbeat contrast to the inevitably sad lyrics.
The music video for this single fits the sound of the song perfectly. It seems as though the video is made to look like it was recorded on a digital camera, bringing an early 2000’s feel to the song which fits it so well. A lot of the video includes bright orange flames burning past memories from when the band were younger. With the band standing surrounded by them which is an incredibly thought through music video concept giving a cinematic take to the meaning of the song. showcasing the past and your childhood literally burning down as you age and move further and further away from it.
You can immediately tell that this song was made for the love of music and not to conform to the idea of chasing viraity. The lyrics are raw and deeply human, they don’t shy away from discussing their true feelings on growing up in this single. With the lyric ‘these days I never get anything right’ which feels like something which at some point is true to everyone but is not often discussed.
This song truly pulls you in and keeps you captivated for the entire thing with the sincerity and unique sound of it.
